What is America250
Also known as the U.S. Semiquincentennial, America250 commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. This milestone celebration highlights the nation’s history, culture, and communities through special events taking place throughout 2026. Celebrations across Alabama will include patriotic festivals, historical programming, concerts, and community gatherings to honor the country’s past while looking ahead to its future.
Coastal Roots in American History
The Alabama Gulf Coast adds to the broader American story and reflects the evolution of American coastal life, from early settlement and defense to modern-day recreation and tourism. Here are a few things you may not know:
- Orange Beach: Originally a small fishing village connected to maritime trade, Orange Beach has grown into a marina-centered coastal community renowned for waterfront recreation and entertainment.
- Fort Morgan: Standing as one of the Alabama Gulf Coast’s most significant historical sites, it played a key role in Civil War naval history, particularly during the Battle of Mobile Bay.
- Gulf Shores: In the early years, a quiet fishing and agricultural area, Gulf Shores has evolved into a popular destination shaped by tourism, conservation, and a protected coastal environment.
Along Alabama’s Gulf Coast, the celebration takes a distinctly Southern feel with beachside merriment in honor of this once-in-a-generation national occasion. If you’re planning a visit to Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, or Fort Morgan, here are a few fun ways to join in the celebration!
